I am currently working on a additive synthesizer in MaxMsp. I have a basic problem triggering the sound, basically when I hit the key on a midi keyboard it plays the triggers the sound however, when the key goes into release it triggers the sound again. Basically, when played the key triggers the sound twice, what is not desired.

How to do I make it so there is only one single hit ?

What are you using to track keystrokes? The most common object for this purpose, [key], only triggers on keydown events, so it wouldn't produce your problem.

If you're using [hi], well, you can do it that way and filter out keyup events. But [key] is probably easier.

Although a sample of your patch would help for a better and quicker approach to your problem,

I have seen the following mistake many times, so maybe this is it!

When you release the midi key, you get a message of a note on with velocity 0.

If you trigger the note generation with the incoming pitch, don't! Use the velocity instead!

You should be aware that when you release a key from your midi keyboard, you get a message like if you pressed that note but with velocity 0.

If you use a [notein], I usually connect a [sel 0] to its second outlet to filter the note offs.

Although a sample of your patch would help for a better and quicker approach to your problem,

Peter Castine, I am using key object, that's exactly why i don't get the problem occuring.

You're not handling your note offs properly. You were getting the pitch message for note on and note off, triggering your envelopes on each message.

Thanks Evan for dealing with my problem and your advice. I have replaced note in patcher with yours but there is now there is no sound triggered at all. I have tried to change it a bit, but didn't manage to come up with anything. Anything else I should try ?Thanks for any help

Make sure that the [midiin] object is listening to the proper MIDI device?

I doubled click on midiin object and tried all three option, my MIDI keyboard, MAX1 and MAX2, no message is being send when key is played, but when I hit the message object connected to send object it triggers the sound.

While Evan's approach is nice, mine is the following:

The [s bang] inside the notein should be connected to the kslider's right outlet which outputs the velocity of every note played.

Then, you connect a [sel 0] to filter the note offs.
