It’s been going ok but I’m wondering if there is a better setup to suit my needs. There are so many options I’m finding it a bit confusing and thought I’d ask.
What I really want is to make use of a local coordiante system (each joint relative to the parent) rather than the world coordinate system, as I want to measure acceleration separately for each joint and get the data into Max.
What do you think the best solution is?

I’m looking to do the same thing. I recommend getting the latest sdk and learning c#. Microsoft has a great tutorial series that will get you up and running on the msdn website. It sounds like a lot of trouble but in the end you will have exactly what you want.
