I'm a student at college, and my father is thinking about giving me Max/MSP as a birthday present, and he is also interested in using the program. How does the licensing work? Can Max be installed and used on both machines or will it only work for a single computer?

there is only one authorisation per ilok dongle - but you can and may move it to another computer whenever you want.

iLok isn't the only way to authorize and hasn't been since at least version 4. With the serial number registration you can absolutely install on two computers. Now whether there is a restriction on the installs being used simultaneously I'm not sure. I would assume so but I've never had an occasion to find out since I am only one person.

Personaly I like the iLok authorization best. Well, it has the disadvantage of the dongle but it makes it very easy to switch machines. Once Max has started you can remove the dongle. so there is no risk in case of live performances.

IMHO there's no 'best practice' for this. On one hand, if you don't use the iLok, you can register only one copy of Max at the same time, although you can always ask them to give you an additional license. They usually do. I have a single machine, but since it runs two operating systems, I asked for an additional license for my Windows copy of Max and they gave me one. However, the procedure of asking for additional licenses each time when I reinstall Windows is a pain ** *** ***, so after a while I became too lazy and now I only have the Runtime installed on my secondary OS. On the other hand, with the iLok, you have one more gadget to care about (you know, small things usually always break or simply get lost), besides, it is super-expensive (purchasing an iLok increases the price of Max by approx. 20% if you're a student). My personal opinion is that I would _never_ use an iLok, but I guess that depends on one's taste and budget...

It is a PITA having to use a 'spare' USB slot. Installation is an extra chore too. And again, as Siska rightly says, it's an extreme PITA if you're running Windows having to request a 'new' validation every time you do a reinstall (which is f*cking often; why am I still running Windows??).

I have two systems: one hardcore machine for Max, Ableton, media etc and one internet machine also running Max. There is a limit to the number of times you can do this tho.
