Error -5000 is permissions errors. Make sure you have proper 

permissions set. Launch Disk Utility to do that.

I get teh same error, and Disk repair's "repair permissions" feature didn't change a thing. Anymore clues on this problem?

Using Max5 demo (18 days left) on ibook G4 OS 10.4.11 - it worked well until this noon...

...for some reason i assumed there'd be no support for the use of demos?

Well, i gave it a try and mailed support about this. I'd be surprised, if they have any support for demo users, though. It'd be a shame really, just recently got into MAX (again after ten years of not looking at it) and it felt fine. However....

We're happy to support demo users and extend their demos if they have problems during the demo period.

which arises here is good to know and if solved will help all users of

When I'm back in Berlin, I can show you some tricks. Its dangerous 

though, you likely get hooked, But there is always the AMJ, which 

discuss their problems here. (can't tell what it means, its anonymous...;-)
