I'm finally giving up on Rewire because all the usual fixes just aren't working this time, so I was wondering what anyone else is using to do this?

Most of the posts here on the subject are quite old ("Can't be done- Pro Tools wont play nice" etc.) but since PT 9 it should be a lot easier, no?

I've have limited success with Jack, but strangely I was still able to hear a 'clean' feed from my guitar as well as the Max-processed one.

And I tried setting up an aggregate devise with Soundflower as described here

 , but couldn't get the Soundflower inputs to appear in Pro Tools.

I'm using Pro Tools 9, Max 6 on Snow Leopard, btw

In my experience all 3rd party solutions like ReWire, Soundflower and Jack are somewhat unreliable since they may get affected by OS updates. It's too bad that OS X doesn't provide a built-in audio routing feature similar to IAC for MIDI.

On OS X there is AUNetSend & AUNetReceive which works well for audio streaming between host applications but doesn't provide accurate timing due to some unpredictable latency.

To answer my own question, for the benefit of anyone else who needs to do this, I eventually got there by a) updating my version of Soundflower to the latest version (doh!) and b) using Soundflower (64ch) as the Audio Engine in PT, and Soundflowerbed to monitor.

I couldn't get it to work using Soundflower (2ch) because PT's transport wont work if a track doesn't have a valid input and output, and if they're both set to the same two channels of Soundflower, you have a feedback loop, so you have to use the 64 ch version and set your other application (in my case MaxMSP) to output on say ch's 3 & 4.

I also notice that Soundflowerbed seems to need 'reminding' where it's supposed to be outputting to; if you change your audio setup in either application, even though Soundflowerbed may still be indicating that it's outputting to your preferred device, you sometimes need to check that output again before you'll actually hear anything.

In theory an aggregate device made up of your audio hardware and Soundflower (2ch) should work, but after several frustrating days of trying, I gave up,
