I need to receive AND record incoming MIDI data to a Max for Live device that is part of an audio track signal processor. I am assuming recording MIDI on a separate track will be easy enough. But I want to be able to edit that track and then use the MIDI to drive the processing on the audio track.

With my years of Max programming, I thought this job would be a piece of cake. I have managed to a build M4L device that does the MIDI part fine ... and an audio effects device that processes the audio fine, but I haven't managed to build a M4L device that offers both on an audio input. Nor have I figured out how to route the MIDI output from from a MIDI track to and drive the audio processing.

I've now spend hours reading documentation and looking at examples and do not find a single example that does this. But this seems so absolutely basic to me that it's hard to believe an audio signal processor on an audio track can't have a MIDI input via M4L.

If it's not possible ... or if I don't figure out how in the next hour or two I think I have to start looking for a completely different method using two computers? Deadline is looming!

Well ... figured out a workaround (not too clunky). I put all the MIDI input part of my Max patch into a M4L device on a MIDI track and all the audio processing part of the patch into a M4L device on an audio track. I then used [send] and [receive] objects to pass the MIDI on the audio effect on an audio channel. This probably introduces some cross-track latency issues, but thankfully that shouldn't be a problem for this project. If anyone knows another solution, I'd be happy to hear it.
