I have been working with mxjs for a few years now, and never encountered this problem: when I change my code, nothing happens once I paste / replace the corresponding mxj in max, or even when I restart max completely.

I have tried to restart my computer, to rebuild the java project... Nothing worked...

but sending the message testMethod to the mxj returns "sd.stretshift doesn't understand testMethod" ...

However, the previous program still seems to work as it was before that happened...

I tried to build the max project as a collective with the option "include folder" and included the java folder. (I never did that before: I usually add the java folder by hand after the application is built)

Any clue to what is happening would be much appreciated!

Found my answer: the application file was in the same folder as the maxpat file, so the maxpat was looking into the application java code instead of the new one.
