patches as code? Possible stupid question!

March 11, 2008 | 11:59 pm

Hi all.

I was just wondering about how people manage to share patches as lines of test in the forum? Is it a simple export or save as option within max? I want to know because it seems like a really handy method of trouble shooting, as well as a good way of getting to see other peoples work. As you can probably tell I’m still a bit of a Max/MSP amateur, as well as being new to the forums!

Thanks in advance
Mike

Hi Mike,

Save your patch as a "Max text file" instead of "Max binary file" using the "Save as" option in the file menu. Next use the "Open as text" option to open the file. From there, it’s just copy and paste.

Besides the "open as text" option, you can do this while editting any patch:

Ctrl-A to select all
Ctrl-C to copy
Go to your browser. Ctrl-V to paste.

Easy, right?

You can also select sections of you patch and just copy those parts if you want.

OK, so how do you open somebody’s text file from the forum as an actual max/msp patch?

I’m in a very inquisitive mood tonight!

Thanks in advance
Mike

Copy the code off the forum and under the File menu there is an option called "New from clipboard" or something like that (I don’t have Max in front of me right now).

Or just paste into any patch window that is open for editing.

You can also copy any number of objects, then choose Paste Picture — it’ll make an in-patcher bitmap of what you selected. Interesting and sometimes handy, but it does make patches really big (see the rather large list below). For large images use jpeg and fpic or some variant.
