Read Growl Notifications

Jul 08 2012 | 9:02 pm

Very quick one:

Does anyone know of any way to ‘receive’ Growl notifications in Max? I’ve got a Max patch that I’d like to respond to things that Growl says.

I have something that sort of works on Mac OS X over UDP.

The Max patch uses [mxj net.udp.recv].

Once the patch is open, from the Terminal enter something like

growlnotify --host --udp --port 9888 --message "Hello World"

I’ve given your patch a quick try. Is it limited to sending messages in Terminal using growlnotify? What I really need is to be able to read any Growl notification from any application.

Thanks your response.

I haven’t really used Growl for anything, so I am not familiar with it. In the Growl System Preferences under the network tab, it says that notifications use TCP port 23052 and UDP port 9887. So you could try setting up the above patch for port 9887 and then using whatever application you want to generate a Growl notification. If the patch doesn’t pick it up, it might be possible to receive the message via TCP or use the Growl forwarding system somehow.

Mmm I did try that, with no luck. Nevermind!
