I'm a little confused as to how much of a performance boost there is by having the entire video signal chain at the same relosution?

For instance I have two quicktime movies playing in my patch that are encoded at 320 x 240 at 15 fps. The jit.qt.movie objects that are playing these movies are twice as large (640 x 480). The video goes through some processing (a little jit.tiffany and jit.brosca) and is finally sent out to a jit.window that is 800 x 480.

Do I stand to gain a substantial performace boost by re-encoding all my source video (320 x 240) at the same resolution as the final presentation (800 X 480) ?

generally you just need to fit the situation to your needs.

upsampling is going to be more expensive than down, but they both cost more than the number of pixels staying the same.

that being said, working on an entire matrix chain at a low resolution can save cycles, but you might need the information in your source footage.

it's just a good rule of thumb to think about what your goal is and then go from there. jit.tiffany isn't necessarily going to require more resolution, and upsampling at the end of a matrix chain isn't going to be near as costly as processing a bunch more pixels throughout the entire chain.
