OK figured it out :) However, it seems if the alpha-plane contains nothing but zeros the image is saved without transparency. ??

hi marleynoe, i'm unable to reproduce. your patch works as expected for me, the exported image has an alpha plane of 0, and it is still 0 when re-imported.

what max version and platform are you on?

Sure, this is Max 6.1.9 (ran the patch in 32Bit mode) on MacOS Mavericks 10.9.5.
