I am looking to simulate heat haze using a gl shader in Max. Looking around, I've gathered that my best route might be rendering to texture, applying that to a mesh, and then displacing the vertices of that mesh. Where would I begin to do that? When I read "render-to-texture", is that what I am always doing in Max? Entering in a source and creating a texture out of it?

The final step, the displacement, I have a feeling is going to deal with math that is going to somewhat specialized, but if anyone knows what I need to begin looking into for that, I would appreciate the advice!

I love it! I managed to use a similar method in a shader, really nice to be able to compare the two. Generating new textures I think will be the next big step for me, going to need to look more into the noise and math operators for jitter. Thank you!
