I'd make sure you can get the data you want from *one* intuos4 tablet before going there....

I tried with one Intuos 4 and one Graphire 3 and there was no problem with getting data from those in the same time.

I'm asking because I believe there were some reported issues related to the use of the wacom object and OSX in 10.6, I believe.

Using Max 4.6, Graphire 3, Intuos 4 in Os X 10.6.3 without any problem...

I have some trouble using two intuos 4 tablets - perhaps it is too much to ask, but could you post the wacom tablet partof your patch?
