I want to use the umenu to change the place it plays the audio back from and to. For example I do not always want to play the audio sample from the beginning to the end. I would like to play it back from the middle to the end. But I want to use the umenu to do this, instead of using a message. Is there a way I can do this?

It is possible if you use umenu together with sfplay~ object. You can append any message you want to umenu object by sending it a simple message "append". You can use the same message to send multiple appends, make sure you separate them with coma otherwise it won't work. Here is a quick example for you, hope it's helpful:
