I have a Max external, which includes a number of attributes. I have some code that updates the value of an attribute, and I'm using object_attr_touch() to notify any connected objects about the attribute change.

I also have a notify routine that gets notifications of any attributes being changed — but I only want to receive these when an external object changes the attribute.

Unfortunately, calling object_attr_touch() also causes my notify routine to be called. Is there any way I can stop that from happening? Or, in the notify routine, differentiate between notifications from the user vs. notifications from my own code?

In your notify method you can filter by the sender of the notification like this:

t_max_err my_notify(t_mystuct *x, t_symbol *s, t_symbol *msg, void *sender, void *data)
{
    if (sender != x) {
        // ...
    }
     // ...
}


t_max_err my_notify(t_mystuct *x, t_symbol *s, t_symbol *msg, void *sender, void *data)
{
	if (sender != x) {
		// ...
	}
 	// ...
}
