I have a really simple patch I'm trying to make: play a series of videos with their included audio. No processing whatsoever.

The issue seems to be that while each video appears fine in Quicktime and other applications, the image is behind the music in Max. The video isn't running at a slower rate than the audio--it seems it is starting a half second later than the audio at the beginning. This is a big problem because the idea of this project is that musicians play along with the video (it is a scrolling score with a line snapping on the beats).

There must be some issue I have overlooked with frame rates, or some way to sync the video to the audio. I know nothing about this stuff, though. I've looked everywhere but all the info I can find is about live processing, etc. I would greatly appreciate any help--thanks in advance.

The video is a 720p .mov that I made in iMovie. 17mb. The data rate is 722 kb/sec. Codecs: h.264, aac.

I have tried using jit.playlist hooked up to jit.pwindow, and also tried jit.movie, but all seem to render the same result. The video definition is also very bad, for that matter, so if there's some way to get Quicktime-level quality in Max, I would be very thankful for any help.

What version of Max are you working with ?

Jitter in Max7 is very capable of playing 4k video with crystal clear definition no problem.

ps. In advance, if you want to sync audio to video , the best way is to have the audio drive the frames.

SO MSP as master and jit.movie as slave. 

Phiol suggested the best method there, running it via msp will give sample accurate playback. Are your videos being sent to the GPU with the jit.gl.videoplane object ?
