I've been looking for a good synthesis plugin for use inside Max (not via OSC or otherwise although I may do that too).

Automat is perfect (free, sounds good for the sounds I need, etc.) but is an Audio Unit and there is no way to use it inside the patch.

FAW Circle would be really nice (even though it costs) but is not VST 2.4 compatible so Max cannot open its editor.

I've used (and own) Zebra but it has a few problems living in Max currently as well.

I'm on a Mac, would like a solid, low CPU VST that is "virtual analog" or whatever. Sample players need not apply. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Right, but it (au~) only supports effects - it doesn't allow MIDI input - so synth Audio Units will not work with it. I've been in touch with him about it and have confirmed this.
