Want to buy Max 6 but worried that Max 7 is right around the corner….
I currently own max 5 and am thinking of buying the upgrade to 6.
Does anyone have any incite into when Max 7 will be coming out? Not because I’m impatient, in fact I don’t have any particular desires, but because looking at the release cycles, Max 7 would be due this year and I’d hate to pay for the upgrade (which is a lot of money for me and especially because the update seemed fairly small to me) and then the day after, Max 7 is announced and I’m like 3 days out of the free upgrade period or something, like when max 5 came out… If it’s coming out in like 6 months, I’d literally just wait…… If it’s stay on 6 for the next 10 years obviously I’ll upgrade as soon as I have the cash.
Any ideas anyone?
The nicest thing I can suggest is, you’ve waited this long, hold what cash you have and buy in when the next paid upgrade appears.
A new release seems not so far away, but maybe it’s just my impression…
But I think that only Cyclers, normally very cautious, can say something decisive… :)

oh man, trying to keep up is bound to get expensive with new major versions coming out so soon :p (no matter how soon, it’s going to be too soon)
(i still miss max5 for the easy thin patchchords and lack of mousey-interface-wheely/arrow thingies that always get in my way…. i know i know! you can turn it all off in prefs(i assume)… but i like to torture myself! …where’s that crack pipe?… oh cool, here it is… *cough* *convulse* ok, ready for some more maxing… no wait… where’s my gun? *15 minutes and some bloodshed later* ok, NOW ready for some more maxing >:D)
Still. Hate. Scroll wheel.
Yeah I’ve been using the demo of max 6 which is why I’m thinking of upgrading, and I agree that little wheel thing on every object is excessively retarded.
I guess I’m going to wait then because I don’t have enough money to upgrade twice.
Go with the tool that does what you want or need. For example, if you wanted to make a project *today* with physics simulations or 64-bit support, then Max 6 fits your needs and is a stable ready-to-go-solution. Waiting prevents you from doing things today. And "projective future buyer’s remorse" sounds like a neverending worry/regret loop.
Helpful hint: if you don’t prefer the wheel that can appear to the left of objects, you can adjust your Max preferences. Options/Preferences. In the interface section is "Large Circular Menu" and "Show Circular Menu after click".
Go to 5:54, and tell me we don’t have a paid upgrade soon.
Ha ha ha thats pretty clear
where is the speculation that MAX 7 is almost here coming from?
because looking at the release cycles, Max 7 would be due this year
I also have a feeling that it will come more or less soon. We haven’t had many updates rescntly too.
There’s actually another video where he says something like "There’s like 18 different branches of Max Seven—You know what, I’m not gonna go into it. No one, no one cares."
I’d actually appreciate it if cycling would talk more about this..
Yeah, I spotted Sam’s hints etc too. A few years ago Gregory Taylor did the same thing at a conference, with a pre-release Max 6 shortcut on his desktop, causing much speculation then; it’s their least expensive mode of PR I guess. I’m a hardcore late-adopter anyway so it doesn’t bug me.
@diablodale – there is no Disable Scroll Wheel preference, and there really really really should be. I hope they sort this in any subsequent versions
I do not know if a new release is in the wings but it sure would be nice to have an idea of what the Max road map is.
I understand some secrecy regarding specific release dates, but I have to agree with Anthony regarding the general road map. Where is Max heading to? What are Cycling’74 main priorities? That I’d love to know in order to decide if they’re aligned to my particular needs or not. I guess that a further step to that kind of communication would be very well received by this community. Here’s something that occurred to me the other day:
Do any of you Dropbox users remember their "Votebox" system? Every user had a number of votes per month (5, if I’m not mistaken) for voting on new features or improvements they’d like to see on Dropbox. You could vote on an existing feature request or formulate your own. I thought that it was a nice way for the developers to know what their customers’ wishes and needs really are.
For instance, a system like that would easily be able to answer the following questions:
How many people are interested in Gen to be able to export code to language X or Y? And how many people are waiting for some improved UI object (e.g: mousestate’s ability to communicate several mouse buttons and the scroll wheel or an easy way to implement a right click contextual menu)? How many users would prefer to have Jitter’s HD video playback without jitter (pun intended) instead of new features? Max is such a broad and comprehensive application that I guess a system like this would be very helpful for the developers in order to decide what particular problems to solve and what popular features to implement.
Let me be clear: I don’t think Cycling’74 owes us anything; they can decide whatever they want regarding Max’s road map. It’s their product. They develop it and if we like it, we can buy or upgrade it. But, as a customer, I would surely like for them to want to know our opinions regarding our needs/wishes.
Although I agree, one must realy say: there is te forum, they are watching it, and accepting feature requests etc.
It’s not like they are totally ignorant.
In the contrary, they do listen to us, in addition to coming up with their own ideas of course.
But they don’t tell us a lot.
Well I guess that is what makes me wonder. I have not seen an official Max7 feature request thread. So what is it they think we are wanting? I for one would like to see an overhaul of MSP to bring it in line with Jitter.

What do you mean by that? Consistency?
btw. let me drop my favourite feature request while we are talking about max7 : tree like overview of all subpatchers and abstractions in a patcher.
