I noticed similar questions have been asked before, but I can't seem to be able to adapt those posts to my issue.

In an installation I am working on, I need to play 21 audio tracks in sync in response to some sensors controlled via Arduino (serial)

Whenever a sensor is activated a track's volume is being revealed or let's say a track is being played from a specific cue point.

At present I am playing all tracks through simple Playlists on load bang.

Their volume is totally silent and it fades it to audible when a sensor (through Arduino) is activated.

Each playlist has only one file and I understand this is not the best way.

Also each track is a .wav hi res and quite heavy (98Mb about 30mins) but could be taken down to 8mb as mp3.

When I was playing up to 8 tracks, it was working fine, now that have 21, the sounds have 'hiccups' and don't play smoothly.

Should I replace the Playlist with sfplay? It looks like it's a rather versatile object, I used poly to achieve polyphony many times but always with short samples which didn't need to be in sync.

one channel is... one channel only, you need 2 channels of audio to play a stereo file.

other than that : you can use signals to trigger sfplay~ so it should allow sample accurate playback triggering if you use 28 of them. It's probably needed to replace your playlist with 28 sfplays though but i'm not even sure of that. 28 different objects are needed for sure.

If you have hiccups, you could try changing the buffer size of sfplay… not sure but maybe it will help ?
