I'm completely new to using lists and can't seem to get my head around them.

I want to work with SysEx midi dump files which consist of 404 bytes but would like to break them down into more manageable sizes.

Does anyone know how I can, for example, split 1 piece of 404 bits of information [looking like: F0 01 02 03 04 05 06 ........ 99 F7] into 4 pieces of information consisting of 101 bytes each?

just use [zl slice], cascaded, but you'll need to alter its default maximum list size of 256 to accommodate your 404-length list:
