Well, the 1/4" input can be done with a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, at least
in a pinch. And I got the M-Audio OS2 for $50 at a local music store,
which has in/out/through. Otherwise, I’ve heard that the PreSonus
FireBox has great preamps, XLR and all that, plus MIDI/SPDIF.
Congratulations on the macbook.

I think they’ve done it like that to save space – it’s the sort of
connector that you get on some lower end PC sound cards. It works ok,
The Firebox is good – I use it for workshops and performance, where
portability is important and number of channels is less important. The
only thing I’ve noticed is that you need to launch the Firebox Control
app before you start to use it in max, though that may be because my
sync source is a Teabox connected to the Firebox (tra la – now
heeeeeear the word of the looord)
