is there anything similar to a ubutton but visible, when not in edit mode?
working on a tap control needing a button, which sends bang on both on and off states, but upon mouse control.
here's what i have and seems clumsy to me:

thank you much for any suggestion,

    p.s. beware i am still on 4.63

i'm sorry don malone, i don't get your idea to work as the patch i posted.
the patch i posted sends a 1, when mousing down over the ubutton area, and a 0 when relasing the mouse button. that way i can achieve to tap times as short as 40 ms, whereas with your idea, given that i wired it correctly, i have to click toggle twice which only gets me approx. 90 ms of minimum tap.
did i wire it wrong? how would you wire it? or is there other ways to send 1 when mouse don and 0 when mouse up? mousestate doesn't do it initially as it reads the mouse anywhere, and no inside a dedicated click region.
a normal button then sends bang only on clicking but not when releasing it. same goes for leds. hmm...

[lcd] has an outlet for reporting mouse up and down. I don't know how helpful this will be in your situation though.

If you are on Mac you could use my good old rs.textbutton object which
      does this nicely:
