umenu won't populate with aiff files

I am sure this is a total newbie problem, but I have read the help and the documentation and still can't get this to work. I would like to populate a umenu with aiff files in the folder C:/Users/Patrick_2/Documents/patches/recordings.
Looking at the help I made the following:
Nothing populates the list. Nor does it work using an open dialog object and selecting the folder. The only way I can get the umenu to populate with aiffs is to drag the folder into a textedit (in the prefix subsection of the help.
one thing I noticed is that the folder object and the message boxes in the help have quotes in them. I can't get quotes to work though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

you need to spell aiff in all caps, like "types AIFF"
      -B
