In stripping down the patch for posting, I isolated the problem, but I thought I'd ask "why" this happens. By sending the word "help" via itoa to a button/bang object, I was making the button.maxhelp file open. In overdrive, this seemed to make Max crash as well. A text file is attached, but basically it is the ascii numerals for h-e-l-p. The easy fix, of course, was to substitute trigger bang for the button. It's the kind of housekeeping I try to do, because it seems cleaner, but now I have a reason to be more rigid about it.
