if you send the zlclear message to zl slice, it clears the argument as well as the contents.

It might not be the most intuitive behavior, but that's the way it supposed to work. When you send the 

 message, the right "value" (aka the number of items you want to split) is reset to the default value (i.e. 0).

OK, understood-- will keep in mind next time ...

EDIT- just revisited the object in question-- while this happens for slice mode, the zlclear message does _not_ affect group mode ie the argument remains.
