The Uncanny Sequencer for Ableton Live

This is a real-time sequencer machine for Ableton Live / Max for Live.
I designed this max for live machine for my own purpose, initially.
IT is really dedicated to the design of unique sequences for idm, braindance music & polyrhythmic

Indeed, I’m also protofuse ( and I need tools that makes my music unique & doesn’t sound like the one of the others.

I had a lot of requests about that, which made me happy about your very strong enthusiasm.

Basically, it provides the way to go out from 4/4
Tweaking step number & rate in each channel, we can simulate different tempo & different signature in a same device.

  • 8 channels (meaning 8 sequencers in one)
  • from 1 to 32 steps in each channel (every number choosable)
  • generates MIDI notes to any devices (inside or outside Ableton LIVE)
  • based on probabilities
  • unique sequences generation
  • huge presets bank engine (including morphing between 2 presets)
  • 10 pages documentation

Here is my introduction in the documentation

Sequencers are machines able to store & repeat sequences of elements. Usually, we use the term sequencers for music sequencers.
Indeed, you have here a music sequencer in hands in the sense of you have a machine able to produce MIDI notes from its output.
Sequencers are often a big grid inside which you place notes, each note having at two carachteristics: its pitch (which means its frequency, more or less high) & its velocity (often mixed with a volume concept but more meaning the power with which you play it)
The note sits in a slot in the grid, usually name an interval or a time position.
You can play with the grid precision, in order to place each note easily on a 1/2nd or 1/3rd or 1/nth bar position.
But a note put in the grid is played everytime the playing cursor crosses it.
With this sequencer, you’ll discover a huge feature at the core of its engine: probabilities. You can place a note at some slot plus a probability for this note.
That way, the note will be played, or not.
This is the stronger feature of this machine.
It is a full functionnal Max for Live MIDI FX Device machine useable in Ableton Live. I’ll hope you’ll have fun using it both for rythmic & melody part in your composition.

Peter Kirn Review
“Labeled as ready for IDM or “Braindance” music, The Uncanny Sequencer could be something tasty for those tired of regular rhythms. The creation of Julien Bayle, The Uncanny Sequencer is a graphical, generative, multi-part sequencing Max for Live device built for Ableton Live. At its core, it creates polyrhythms and irregular rhythms by making the appearance of each beat probabilistic rather than determinate.”

It is a max for live device for Ableton Live.

Looks great. Can anybody give me a clue on how to (simply) work with probability with max ? e.g., a vey simple patch ? Would be much appreciated…

Hi Jeepee,
testing the max objet [random] is a very good start.
it is the atom of this sequencer.

You can test [drunk] & [decide] too, you’ll like them.

Just what I needed. Thanks Christopher

I purchased the Max for Live Ultimate Zen Guide which by the way is excellent. Thank you for that. It came with a zip of extra devices, one of which was the uncanny sequencer. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to work as I have seen demonstrated and have been looking for the documentation, which didn’t seem to come in the zip. Any chance of getting a link to the documentation for this wonderful device?

Does anyone still have this as the devloper doesnt do this anymore?
