If I own Live 10 Suite and I want to use the latest version of Max 8, what should I do?

As of Live 10.0.6, Max for Live is bundled with your Live installation. Once you’ve installed Live, Max for Live is ready to use. However, you may choose to use an external Max installation instead of the bundled version.

    1. Download and install Max 8 to make sure you have the latest version
    2. Open Live, go to Live > Preferences > File Folder > Max Application
    3. Click “Browse”, locate the standalone version of Max, and click “Open”
    4. Restart Live for the change to take effect
Will installing Max 8 cause trouble with my earlier Max versions?

On Windows: Installing Max 8 or greater will not affect installations of Max 7.3.5 (and lower). However, it will overwrite any currently installed versions of Max that are 8 or greater.

On Mac: Both Max 7 and Max 8 show up as “Max” in your applications folder. This means if you have Max 7 installed and go to install Max 8, you will be asked if you want to write over the previous version. If you want both installed, change the name of Max 7 application from “Max” to “Max 7”.

Is there a separate runtime installer?

No. You can run, edit and save Max patches for the first 30 days. After 30 days, you can still run and edit Max patches, but you cannot save your changes without a purchased authorization.

Is there a separate Mira installer?

No. As of Max 7.0.2, Mira supporting files are included in the Max installer.

Will Max 8 work inside of Live 10 Suite as the Max for Live Editor?

Yes, but the current release of Live 10 includes an earlier version of Max 8 - not the version you can download on this page. Most of the new features and improvements in the new, standalone Max 8 application will be part a future Live 10 release. Please get the latest information about Max 8 in Live 10 from Ableton's Knowledge Base.

Where can I get more information on the 64-bit application? Is 32-bit supported?

If you need to run a 32-bit version, then download Max 7.3.5 or older. Visit the 64-bit Information section of the Max 8 FAQ.
