3D – Importing 3D environments into MAXMSP

I’m relatively new to this software but am hoping to use it as part of my final year project.

I’m looking to create a 3D environment and use face tracking to look around it.

I’d like to make the environment as detailed as possible and as I can already use 3D Studio Max and Softimage XSI I was hoping that there’s some kind of way to export a complete environment incl lights and shadows etc out of a 3D software and into MAXMSP??

I already know a tiny bit about creating 3D objects in MAXMSP ie. the sphere, cube etc but I guess I’m really asking how far MAXMSP can go with this whole area im looking into.

Any help or advice would be reatly appreciated!

it’s possible but will not be an easy first project in maxjitter.
fact is im not sure if its been done b efore by anyone in the
community.
if our ready for some pain and glory and willing to compromise. it could work.

i suggest to start tackling different modules separately. like the
face tracking and camera controlling for starters.

Hi Seany,

Yes, it can be done. I’ve done it before while working with a good 3D modeler/animator. Creating 3D models in 3D studio is not my thing, but I remember she had to play around a bit to get the poly count low enough for good performance in Jitter.

As for looking around a room via face tracking, it really isn’t that difficult:

But I’ll let you get to work on it, and you should come back and post patches with specific questions if you are having trouble on the way.

best,
Zachary

Hello,
This is my first post , and I am very new with max.
I also want to import a 3dmax model into maxmsp. I was told that I could export the 3dmax model as an *.obj, and then work with it in Jitter.
Now I could have a list of the solids properties, but I am not sure how to operate with this in max..
Thanks a lot for any orientation!

i think what !Juliana! is looking for is a CAVE project.

i think you could find on off the shelf cave environment that allows
network comm and you could have max control the camerahead.

thanks, that answer was quick…
I am still dealing with the solids, but I will take a look at the cave projet in the wiki.

Maybe so, but there’s nothing stopping anyone from building a CAVE-
like tool using Max/Jitter. You might just need many man months to do
so… We did it at UCSB a couple of years ago. There’s some
description of it here [1].

But, OTOH, if all you want to do is load in .obj files, then look at
jit.gl.model (with Jitter) or jit.ogre [2] and see how far that gets
you…
