I just recently realized after much yelling at the computer that max seems to automatically implement measures to prevent feedback loops

however i would like to make a feedback loop

I'm attempting to build a fairly elaborate fm synth with flexible modulation routing

I've attached the maxpat that represents the core of each fm operator as a patch and .png

Everything works great until I attempt to use a matrix for routing or for that matter feed an operator's signal into its modulation input...even using the limiter

Now I have to wonder how the DX7 accomplished this

I can't find anything on the forums or elsewhere about this message, but an interactive booth (max-based) we put up last year at the science center here in Montreal is starting to give this message and won't connect to the in/outputs. We are using a Focusrite soundcard (Scarlett 18i8), running Max 7 on a PC platform.

I'm assuming that the message translates as something like Audio driver is getting a zero signal vector size, but not sure what that implies or what might be the issue. The soundcard comes up in the list when adststus is polled, and is selected, and its own driver software seems to be working fine.

I know it gets brought up every once in a while, but I thought I'd post again to see what the interest was out there for getting Max working in Linux.

I jump between Mac, Winows, and Linux (Ubunutu) fairly regularly as no single OS can do everything I need under one roof. I teach at a university in physics and recording arts where I use Max, Wavelab, Nuendo, and Live extensively for demonstrations and PowerPoint/Keynote for presenting. I also run a recording/mastering/post studio where I again use Nuendo & Wavelab. But I also run an acoustic R&D company where I use Solidworks, QCAD, and a few other drawing/modeling tools. And lastly I head up an interdisciplinary research collective that mostly uses Max, but also vvvv, Processing, TouchDesigner, Quartz Composer, etc.

But I'm finding that I prefer Linux above Windows and Mac more and more for the sheer speed, customization, and adaptability even though it's by far the least supported for applications which really bums me out. While I'm a big supporter of open source I'm also happy to pay for good commercial software like Max. i just wish Max, and a few others, would run on Linux.

Max is one of the biggest hangups for me to not spend almost all of my time in Linux. PD is a great program, no doubt, but I rely on a lot of the awesome and amazing externals out there and the great Max community (along with a number of other reasons). Even getting Max to run under Wine would be OK, though native support would be much more preferable. But the iLok stuff only works on Mac/Win, even though I use the software key/internet activation.

So I'm interested if there's any other folks out there in the same boat as myself. I know Linux support is a low priority for most commercial companies that are trying squash bugs and be innovative, but I feel like Ubuntu and other flavors are on the rise and have some very cool potential in the multimedia realm (but that could also be just because I've been getting more into it personally). If there's enough of us requesting maybe we could see a Linux release in the future! Anyone else interested in seeing this happen?

is there a way to query the absolute filepath of a (or multiple)buffer in polybuffer~?

With the dump message it's supposed to give the path for each file, but I only get the filename where the path is supposed to be?

The reason why this is useful (at least to me) is it would make it possible to store the absolute file path in a coll. In M4L you could then switch presets or livesets and have the coll send the remembered absolute file path list to polybuffer~.

Ofcourse it would be possible to hack something together with readfolder, but it would be cumbersome and inefficient and would cripple the polybuffer~ capabilities.

I therefore enjoy experimenting with probability and random sequencers.

I mostly work in Ableton and try to create structured chaos there.

I saw an interview with Brian Eno on YouTube where he used an app to play 3 or 4 randomly selected files together from a folder of sound files.

These sound files were organized by the scale in which they were created, so that they matched musically when played together.

So, I would like to create something myself using Max MSP where I could execute the same principle as described above.

What are the functions of the Patch I want to create:

- These players share a common start and stop knob

- Each player is assigned to a file folder from which it randomly selects a sound file and starts playing it. - When a file finishes, the player randomly selects another sound file from the assigned folder and plays it.

- I would also like to see the name of the sound file that each player is currently playing, as well as the "filepath" where this file can be found.

- If a really nice combination of files were to arise while playing the random files, I would like a function where, with the press of a single button, the filename and "filepath" of the sound files currently playing are saved so that I can play them together again later or import them into a DAW to create a song.

I am fairly new to programming patches myself.

I have already discovered the "Sf Play" module, which I believe could be the appropriate sound file player.
