Cycling '74 was a name given to a software web site to sell a program called MSP. The site was designed by Cat's Eye Press to use the Brush Script font, images taken from a 1974 Schwinn bicycle catalog, and a pastel-to-Howard Johnson color palette -- all elements not associated with technology products at the time. A few months later, the project started getting out of hand when the company "Cycling '74" was officially incorporated in the State of California (so we could get health insurance) and a small office on Folsom Street in San Francisco was opened. The project has operated continuously for the past 13 years, with the exception of most weekends and major holidays.

Everything was built in Max 6. The iPhone communicates with a laptop (or two) over Wifi using the C74 app and object. The complete soundscape (dialogue system, granulated playback, procedural/synthetic systems, interactive mixer), GPS calculations and game logic/mechanics was built in Max and JavaScript within Max.
