Cycling '74

This patch shows how we can create a particle system using Jitter matrices and the jit.gen object.

The jit.matrix objects are used to pass data like particles position, lifetime and velocity, from the current frame to the next one.

This is possible because jit.matrix objects with the same "name" attribute share the same data.

The jit.gen object is used to process the position and velocity vectors and the particles properties, like lifetime and color.

The particles are rendered using a jit.gl.multiple that uses a sphere jit.gl.gridshape as a target. The size and color of the spheres are also influenced by the lifetime of the particles.

Table Synth is by no means the most advanced synthesizer ever created, but it could be useful as a starting point for experimenting with the use of tables for waveforms and envelopes. It has a charming vocal-like quality due to the combination of wavetables and a filter with a lot of resonance. Just draw and enjoy.

You’ll want to set aside time to wrap your head around the ideas to get the most from it, but there’s plenty of help files available to get you started if you just want to jump in.

AudioMix by Manuel Poletti - Even if you’ve come to Max to free yourself of tracks and mixing boards, this concise set of ready-to-use components will come in handy when you need to patch together a mini-DAW in your patch.

Cv.jit by Jean-Marc Pelletier - Although you’ve probably heard of cv.jit, or even used it before, the latest version includes a number of improvements from the latest OpenCV libraries and is overall more stable. It’s hard not to come up with new ideas while browsing the examples included.

Sound Design Toolkit - Ready to make some sound effects? This super fun package gives you tools that allow you to mimic real-world physical sounds or invent imaginary machines, alien creatures, or sci-fi environments.

VSynth by Kevin Kripper - Kevin has been providing steady updates to this analog-inspired video synthesis package since its first release. Play around with the amazing library of examples and try your hand at some abstract video. 

XY Coordinates Generator Pack - Is it time to liven up your control signals? This package includes a rich set of tools created with Gen to generate a broad variety of spatially animated control signals.

MC Movement Studies - Explore unique ways to use multichannel audio along with procedural JSUI visualizations inspired by Daniel Shiffman’s “The Nature of Code”

Jitter Tools - A small set of tools to extend Jitter. Try out jit.gl.meshwarp, a full-featured interactive video mapping tool for creating unique projection setups. Also included are polymovie (like polybuffer~ for videos) and jit.gl.textureset (like jit.matrixset for textures).

Upshot - Benjamin Van Esser’s extensive collection of modular music tools includes everything from sequencers and event generators to instruments and audio effects. This package is full of gold for generative music makers.

This patch does a kind of gritty Buffershuffler-esque reordering of the  last bar of audio. I've hard coded it with crusty old drumLoop.aif to  reduce clutter in the patch, but you'll be able to pretty easily open it  out to other files or live input. You'll need both Overdrive and SIAI on  so that the phasor~ @lock is steady. HAPPY PATCHING!!!!!!!

 Next steps to take in its evolution could be: 

adding variation to the amount of history being collected

changing the direction of playback of a step

copying out parts of audio history into other buffers so that you build up a more diverse history of audio

A camera is pointed at the mushroom, and the live video feed is sent to the computer for analysis. This is done in Jitter, which tracks the spores in real time. The data is processed in Max and sent out Arduinos, which control musical instruments.

Third-party packages and external objects created by the community have been an important part of Max since the earliest days. Max 8.2 gave us the ability to run Max natively on Apple Silicon computers. The recently updated Max 8.2 SDK extends this support to third-party externals, which must be recompiled to run in Max 8.2 natively. The Max SDK build system has also been modernized with CMake support to aid in cross-platform development. Finally, for those who wish to develop using both Max SDK and the Min API, these are  now updated to share the same base headers and libraries.
