We are happy to introduce the new Sensel package, providing access to the Morph multitouch surface, to the Max Package Manager. 

When Sensel rolled out their Morph interactive surface, a lot of us in the Cycling ‘74 virtual office were very interested to see what this thing could do. While they offer several interesting interchangeable smart overlays, Max users will be most interested in the “Innovator’s” overlay, which is a blank, translucent rubber surface that allows you to use the Morph as a multitouch controller. The translucency allows you to print out a custom control layout to use as a guide underneath the overlay.

The package itself is pretty straightforward - simply install it from the Max Package Manager and open the Launch patcher to get started. You’ll notice there are 2 objects available, the sensel and jit.sensel objects. The sensel object provides rich information about surface touches as Max dictionaries. In addition to position, the output also provides force and surface area of the touch, as well as some other variables I wasn’t able to immediately put to use. 

You may need to brush up on your dict objects a little bit (like me), but you can also just copy the work inside of the Three Sensel Sliders example patcher to get started. Several of us also found that adjusting the sensitivity attribute is pretty key to getting the right kind of data out of the morph.

The jit.sensel object provides a representation of the controller surface as a single-plane Jitter Matrix, showing touch force across the surface. This could be used along with cv.jit objects or directly drive video masking or OpenGL mesh manipulations.

Max is used as a brain of the controller. First the interface is configured within a Max patch and  openGL drawing commands are sent to Fantastick app running on an iPad or other iDevice. Fantastick sends raw touch data to Max, where it is analysed for interactions with the control objects. Finally the screen is updated and OSC messages are generated, which can be used to control anything capable of receiving them. All communication between Max and the iPad happens over WiFi. The controller layouts can be saved within Max as presets.

A large and growing repository of Max 5/6 abstractions, javascripts, shaders, etc I've made and found useful over the years. Some will be generically useful to people, others are esoteric or specific to the way I use max. Some are well documented, others are not so much. I hope some of these will be useful to people.

[MMF-Fantastick] : Max Multitouch Framework for iPad, iPhone & iPod-touch + Fantastick

MMF-Fantastick is an extension of MMF (Max Multitouch Framework) : a set of abstractions to control max user interface directly within a multitouch screen.

mtloo is a multitouch trackpad looper. It supports up to four loops and is meant to be used with Apple's multitouch trackpad. The parameters which can be controlled with the trackpad are: volume, playback speed, panning (2ch), effect feed (wet/dry), loop size, loop starting point, record new loop. For most of these parameters the user also has the possibility of saving and retrieving presets.

It is shared here as an example of putting together various techniques in creating a basic user interface which allows a user to control a Max/MSP patcher using only Apple's multitouch trackpad for live performance. It is an example of putting to use some of the tools in the matra toolbox.

The patcher used in this project was written in Max/MSP and it transforms the magic trackpad into an instrument for controlling the looper and enabling the performer to manipulate his/her sounds live.

This is a collection of various tools, tricks, techniques for using the magic trackpad in controlling various objects in the Max/MSP environment, including sliders, multisliders, matrices, waveforms, even potentially using the trackpad as the monome arc!

This toolbox uses the external [fingerpinger] by Michael and Max Egger (which is included) and a basic requirement is a post-2008 intel macbook with a multitouch trackpad, or a Magic Trackpad and compatible software (e.g. Mac OSX Snow Leopard or later).

Max/msp/jitter was used for capturing the live video feed, splitting it to pieces, decoding OSC data from a multitouch FTIR screen and also sending the pieces coordinates to M4L objects for controlling audio effects parameters.
