This installation refers to characteristic soundscapes of Krakow.

By moving hands above a map of the city, visitors can experience various soundscapes of different parts of the city.

It’s built using light sensors which react on the changing of the light while hovering the map with hands. Sensors are connected to an Arduino shell and the elaboration of data and sounds is made with Max7.

The soundscape recordings were made with a binaural recording technique, which allows to recreate a realistic impression of the hearable environment.

KRK SoundShadows is the result of a collaboration between Francescco Fabris, Denim Szram and Patrycja Maksilewic for the “European Affairs” Exposition at the international meeting between the University of Art Science of The Hague (Netherlands) and the Intermedia Department of Krakow (Poland).

A digital granary of processed instrumental and electronic sounds, field recordings, rock formations, plants, animals and swarms unfolds a narrative of becoming.

The prime material of the work consists of deconstructed human voices, physical instruments and field recordings dissolved in an imagery of photographs, videos and processed visual material collected around the Troodos mountain range on the island of Cyprus.

I have worked with custom software to algorithmically process the source material, generatively creating configurations of visuals and sound; a collaboration between human and algorithm, the work constitutes an audiovisual 'narrative of becoming' and questions the relationship between the digital and the organic. 

Software developed in MaxMSP & Jitter. Visuals are rendered in 4K using an Atomos device. Sound is edited in Ableton Live. Go Back to Hiding in the Shadows is performed live using Max for Live.

Go Back to Hiding in the Shadows Collection of Audiovisual Works

An interactive installation which aims to create a sonification of stars and constellations data through a dedicated interface.

Since there’s no sound in space, I wanted to to conceptualize a link between electromagnetic and sound waves allowing visitors to learn about specific stars through sound information.

Two players can use the system at the same time, by moving their right hands over the two black, circular sensors.

The data rendered for each star are: temperature (color index: red star = old and cold, blue star = hot and young), brightness (as seen from Earth), distance (from Earth) respectively mapped into: frequency (Hz), amplitude (dB), duration (ms).

The project has been developed using Arduino, Leap Motion and Max7. 

Objects used include Maxuino (maxuino.org) and aka.leapmotion by Masayuki Akamatsu. 

Data of more than 300 stars and 44 constellations have been stored from the open-source software Stellarium.org, and coded to interact with the robotic arms.
