Next week, a special event will be happening in Brooklyn at Roulette. Toni Dove's "Lucid Possession" premieres April 25, 26, and 27th. Those lucky enough to be in the vicinity will have the opportunity to experience this unique stage production -- a "contemporary ghost story" featuring robotics, gorgeous costumes, and stunning voices and music. There are many talented Max users involved, including Todd Reynolds, Luke DuBois, and Elliott Sharp. They, Toni and all the other artists and crew will make it a memorable experience. Don't miss it!

Moritz Simon Geist has built a (giant) robotic version of the classic Roland 808 drum machine using Max for Live, Arduino, and a heap of solenoids.

From his website: "I see hacking – in this case music hacking – as a form of anti-passiveness, through which I think the individual can have an impact on his or her environment, status and state of mind...Within the last five years the rise of Arduino, Ableton Live and Max/MSP has made this much easier."

Let's get physical: MR-808 is the first drum robot that reproduces the drum sounds of the 80s - in the real world. 
The robot installation MR-808 is a replica of the famous 1980s electronic drum machine TR-808 – with robots playing the drum sounds! I (Moritz Simon Geist) have been playing electronic music for several years now, and at some place I was bored of the electronic music production process. With binary logic, everything is possible. 
So I decided to go back to the roots of sound generation – the physical sound generation – but combine it with the electronic music structure we like so much. 
I liked the idea so much, that I couldn’t stop building my own drum robots, and ended up replacing all the electronic sounds of a whole drum computer, placed in a 3,3 x 1,7m² case. I am very proud to present the “MR-808” – a mechanic replica of the famous 1980s electronic drum machine TR-808!

RIB CAGE is an electro-acoustic instrument that incorporates elements of robotics.    

Max is used to measure the amplitude value of 3D printed rib being played.  Duration of intense performance is mapped to how the solenoid hit the aluminum bar.  More solenoids start playing and rhythm becomes faster and chaotic as you play louder than the threshold.  Rhythmic patterns are generated stochastically.      

Max also communicates with Arduino, which is used for activating LEDs and solenoids.  

This instrument was designed for Performing Arts Technology senior thesis project at University of Michigan.

Sound Cage is a mechatronic percussion instrument.

There are four sets of three aluminum bars.  Two of these sets are for human performance and the other two are for the mechatronic component to hit.  

Max is used to measure the amplitude value of aluminum bars that are hit by the performer.  Speed of motorized rod in the middle  depends on this amplitude value.  Motor speed data is then sent to Arduino, which is activating and controlling the motor.  

Aluminum sounds are picked up via contact microphones.  Effects are added in Ableton Live.

Recent additions to the ever mutating Anklepants Live show Have been the custom mic/ controller “facé control wün"

The Mic instrument Is mainly used to Modulate voice processing with 16 buttons and 8 axis of jotstick control + Accelerometer , Where x-y position of the mic is also used to modulate and automate voice / track effects , multi track voice looping and all kinds of sample manipulation ,these gestures can also be recorded and recalled , and routed to various destinations.

The controller also has buttons that purely route information from the accelerometer (in the left hand of the suit) to control the xy postion of the animatronic facé.

and also to activate voice control of the animatronics and to activate the (in the left hand of the suit) accelerometer to modulate other voice effects , combinations of all of these are also available. 

These gestures can also be recorded and recalled , and routed to various destinations to create automated modulations.

All this is done with the use of multiple max/msp m4l patches.

 xbee , atmega and custom terminal application , and also hacked generic wireless mic rf transmitter receiver , custom animatronics and creature fabrication.
