Since Labor Day is coming, you might have some spare time this weekend and might be wondering what you could do. How about a little Max project?

Here's one simple but fun idea, based on an optical experiment I found on Brusspup's Youtube Channel. How about making a patch that would let you do this?

No doubt that you are familiar with Wagon-wheels effect, which is what's happening in the video above. The interaction between frequency of movement and framerate of the camera gives this cool gravity-defying effect.  You might be able to do something low tech for the water fall, but for the Max patch, you should go nerdy!

For instance, instead of using cycle~ to generate a low frequency, why don't you make your own using a fast algorithm (just like this one) in gen~.

To record the video in Jitter, jit.grab will do the work, but you might also want to record the video using jit.qt.record and upload it to youtube! Don't forget to share it.

This is really simple but has such an awesome effect. Fill a bucket full of water and place it about 5 feet off the ground. Place a subwoofer about 1 foot lower than the bucket. Run a plastic tube from the top bucket down in front of the subwoofer. Tape the tube to the front of the speaker. Then aim the end of the tube to an empty bucket on the floor. Get the water flowing from the top bucket. Now just generate a 24 hz sine wave and set your camera to 24 fps and watch the magic happen. Basically your cameras frame rate is synced up with the rate of the vibrations of the water so it appears to be frozen or still. Now if you play a 23 hz sine wave your frame rate will be off just a little compared to the sine wave causing the water to "move backward" or so as it appears. You can play a 25 hz sine wave and cause the water to move slowly foward.

Really fun experiment. You should definitely give it a try.

On my last night in San Francisco, I decided to check out the newly refurbished iMax theatre in the Metreon down the street from Cycling '74 world HQ and catch Roving Mars.

For any space geek, it's a cool, if short, ride. But I found myself tsk-tsking about the use of the mammoth iMax sound system to depict ass-rattling multistage rocket separations, retrorocket racket, and the chest-whacking thump of the Platonic Solid Beachball thingie that surrounded the rover payload (however satisfying a physical experience it might have been). Noise doesn't work like that in a vacuum, and it would certainly work differently in a Martian atmosphere.

But this morning brought a new and interesting question: What does the Moon smell like? Hmmm.... Frying bacon?

This excerpt from Richard Dawkins' new book  The Ancestor's Tale: a Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution apparently engages with an intriguing line of inquiry: If evolution could be re-run, how might the story end differently? To quote Dawkins:

What systems have evolved many times independently, like eyes?
Or "several times", like echolocation? Have some things evolved only
once, or not at all? I suspect that we'd find certain potential evolutionary
pathways which life is "eager" to go down. Other pathways have more
"resistance"....

The cool part of the excerpt, IMHO, is his consideration of evolutionary one-offs. Amazing stuff.
