Live-coding continues to grow as a musical performance format, with Algoraves and similar shows popping up all over the place. Graham Wakefield (Cycling '74) and Charlie Roberts (author of the super-popular Gibber environment) have teamed up to integrate the rapid interface and expressive possibilities of live-coding with other environments, allowing performers to leverage the DSP and other capabilities on offer.  

Gibberwocky began as a Max for Live project that exposed Ableton Live's features to coding with the Gibber environment. This last week at NIME, Graham and Charlie introduced a new Max package that offers the same kind of integration with Max features including signal processing in Gen, the Max transport, and message passing of all sorts. 

Our interest in using musical gesture led to an emphasis on continuous modulation in gibberwocky. Declaring modulation graphs, changing them over time, and creating visualizations depicting their state are all heavily prioritized. The dual-emphasis of pattern manipulation and modulation positions gibberwocky somewhat uniquely among live-coding environments.

If you'd like to learn more about Gibberwocky and live-coding in general, I highly recommend reading over the NIME white paper accompanying the package, and installing the Gibberwocky package from the Max Package Manager.  

This video explores some ideas I've come up with over the past month via performances in NYC, Rochester, and Canada. It's the first performance I'm posting using gibberwocky, a new live coding system that I've developed with Graham Wakefield that integrates with Ableton Live. 
 
A few things to note: 
1. The step sequencer lets you define sequences of different lengths... in a sequence of eight notes, each becomes an 1/8th note, while in a sequence of five notes, each becomes a 1/5. Each value is a hexadecimal number (a-f) specifying velocity. 
2. The modulations are all done using gen~ via Max4Live, and run at audio-rate which much better resolution than what MIDI would typically afford. 
3. The end-user programing language is vanilla JavaScript.

We've been enjoying Iftah Gabbai's instagram posts featuring deceptively simple musical patches, that he often provides as free downloads. We asked Iftah to create a couple of his Micro-music Made with Max MSP patches for us to share here. Iftah writes:

mmWmm stands for micro-music made with max msp. It was born sometime last year when I was knee deep in programming one of the most complex max for live devices I have ever worked on, working on very gray and bureaucratic parts of the code such as file browsers and preset management systems. after these long workdays i had a need for careless creative exorcism, or in other words just very dirty programming which prioritizes musical result over code elegance. After doing this for a while I realized that I'm actually making really nice music using just max, and it's also the first time (being a max user since 17 years) that I use it for strictly musical purposes - might seem obvious, but for me - a real revelation <3.

After many sleepless nights and a few lost hairs I'm chuffed to announce the completion of Coconut: a self contained music sequencing tool made within the MaxMSP visual programming environment. At the heart of Coconut is a multisampled toy Mbira (a small finger piano made from the shell of a coconut) that was given to me as a gift some years ago. Since then it's been bitterly starring at me from my shelf collecting dust, but now it's woody sonic-spirit has been immortalised in the digital realm as ones and zeros! If you're a Mac, download her and give her a whirl! I'd love to hear how you get on. :)
