Hey there!

I want to share something that is often asked: how to implement bicubic interpolation to upscale matrices and textures.

Image upscaling is the process by which we increase the resolution of an image while trying to minimize the loss in image quality that occurs due to enlarging.

In Jitter, we have two methods to increase the resolution of images:
Nearest Neighbor (NN):

Nearest Neighbor interpolation is the simplest upscaling method.

Each pixel in the upscaled image is assigned the value of its nearest neighbor in the original image.

It’s fast but tends to produce blocky and pixelated results.

Bilinear interpolation calculates a weighted average of the four nearest neighbors’ pixel values in the original image.

This method produces smoother results compared to NN but may still lack fine details.


What I'm sharing with you is an interpolation method known as bicubic interpolation.
Bicubic interpolation:

Bicubic interpolation calculates a weighted average of the 16 nearest neighbors’ pixel values in the original image.

It alleviates the artifacts caused by NN and bilinear interpolation, but can be computationally intensive.

Bicubic interpolation is here implemented in Javascript, to perform the upscaling on matrices with arbitrary number planes, and in jit.gl.pix, to perform the upscaling on textures.

Note: this algorithm works only with upscaling. In order to perform hi-res downscaling (aliasing-free), check out the object cv.jit.resize from the cv.jit package

I did this video tutorial where I show how to adapt a PM cross feedback maxpatch from the book Generating Sound & Organizing Time by Graham Wakefield and Gregory Taylor and flash it into the Electrosmith Patch:init submodule. 

This can be used as an example for anyone who is starting to program with Max gen~ (like me) and want to learn how to adapt Gen~ examples to flash them into Electrosmith's patch:init  so this module becomes fully functional with the rest of the Eurorack's modules.

I also explain how to control the pitch of the synth module from with an external CV instrument (V/Oct input) or sequencer, something that I couldn’t find how to do it. I have also included an adjustable envelope to the patch.  Thanks @Takumi_Ogata for the help.

Volume seems a little bit quiet......because of the rampsmooth~ object.
I'm trying to eliminate those pops and clicks,but I failed......(any ideas to remove those clicks in this patch?)

Starting in October 2023, the University of Music (HfM) Trossingen (Germany) will offer a master’s degree program that is unique in Europe and aims to train a new generation of artistically and technically competent composers, sound artists, and music designers, especially by critically exploring the creative possibilities of AI-based technologies.

This program (Master of Music in Composition*) builds on the music technology teaching foundations of the HfM Trossingen and takes place in close cooperation with Furtwangen University. The students are taught by an internationally renowned team of researchers and experienced artistic practitioners, first and foremost Prof. Dr. Luc Döbereiner and Prof. Dr. Joachim Goßmann. In addition, this course is being developed within the framework of a cross-university project funded by the BMBF (KISS - Artificial Intelligence Service and Systems), whose long-term goal is to establish a center of excellence for the sustainable development of AI.
As part of the master’s program, interested students with prior musical and/or technical experience at the bachelor’s level can choose one of three concentrations: Music Design, Instrumental Composition, or Electroacoustic Composition. Available modules of study range from Digital Lutherie, Experimental Sound Synthesis, and Interface Design to Sound Ecology and Digital Ethics. In addition, a new space for the conception, experimentation and realisation of artistic projects (“Latent Space” - Space for Artistic Research and Design in Music and AI) is being created.
