Grid Video

Allows the addition of video to Ableton's clip view using Max for Live.

One video can be added to each clip, which will trigger automatically as the audio triggers.

Visual effects are built into the patch, and tempo is synced for visuals and audio.

Works with the APC or Launchpad, as well as any other MIDI surface, or none at all.

Very handy tool for DJs or bands looking to add synced video to their Live sets.

Tool Files

  • Grid Video (Release notes)

  • Grid Video (main patcher)

  • Grid Video (poly abstractions)

Let me know how it goes

I put the movies in a folder, and named them 11.mov, 12.mov, etc. But your documentation is not good as far as how to get them to play. I ended up having to record a short bit of silence, then play that in the slot, and the movie would then play. Is that how it's supposed to work? Also only 11.mov would play. 12.mov won't play with the above method.

Also, when I click on the editor button in M4L, the wheels just spin and Live says "Starting Max editor..." and that's it. I copied the patcher from the download link above, make a new patcher from text in Max, then saved it as "poly_movies.maxpat" to the same folder as GridVideo.amxd (MacHD/Library/livelib/Presets/Audio Effects/Video), but still no luck.

Any troubleshooting help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks.

Oh, also, a way to choose among multiple cameras would be cool.

Hi - firstly, there needs to be audio in the slots to play the videos- the point of the program is that you can assign a video to each clip of audio in your Live set - then, when you trigger audio, the video triggers automatically.

I was only recently informed that the names of the downloaded files are different than how I uploaded them - download and save them both, and rename back to the original names:

Grid Video.amxd (note the space)
poly_movies.maxpat

- i'm not sure copying from text will be ideal for the poly patcher - poly abstracts can be a bit tricky (as they're multiple instances).

As for the Max editor - you need to get in there to change the filepath - this is essential - if the wheel is spinning and not opening the editor thats just the comp taking some time to load - its a biiig patch - try clicking it again, or even try making a smaller patch, and accessing that to change the filepath - once changed and saved, the filepath should be global for all patches.

Finally, with the cameras, to be honest they were an afterthought for me - i made this patch for a university project, and while im happy to troubleshoot as much as I can, i'm not really planning to develop it - however, if you do succeed in getting the patch open (past the spinning wheel of death) everything inside is clearly laid out, and the camera thing should be a pretty easy tweak - even just open the help file on the grabber, and copy and paste the camera selection bits from inside there.

Hope this helps a bit, like I say, this was a project i thought i'd make available, and its not perfect, but I have found that once you get it up and running its really reliable and pretty easy on the CPU.

Cheers,

James

Hi. Is this no longer available or am I misunderstanding how to download the patch?

Hi there. Cool project and I'm interested in trying it out. But I can't find the actual patch -- the download button only takes me to a .pdf. I'd be grateful if you could post the patch (again?).
Thank you!

Hey Wil / Deb

I just popped the files on Mediafire - grab em from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?idfbwwiez6ptt27

Let me know if they work OK (I've tested em only up to Live 8 / Max 5)

Good luck,

JB :)

Hi thanks for this, and I would love to be able to use it, but I can't get it working with Live 9 / Max 6.1

This is the error I get:

poly~: no patcher poly_movies
poly~: patchcord outlet out of range: deleting patchcord
poly~: patchcord inlet out of range: deleting patchcord

Any insight?

Hey Lukas -

No insight i'm afraid - I havent tested it myself on Max 6 or Live 9 yet - however, I have just bought Live 9, and was planning to get this working in the next few weeks -

so while i'm not sure right now, I will have a look soon and let you know, but cant promise a timescale i'm afraid!

One thing to bear in mind though - I know some of the video stuff in Max / Jitter will not work with 64bit. This could be the problem, but I will let you know when I open the patch up!

Cheers,

James

Oh - one other point - just to check that you put BOTH files into the default Max for Live audio devices folder?

This is the step in the instructions:

To add the device to Live simply drag the files 'Grid Video.amxd' and poly_movies.maxpat into the default Max for Live audio devices folder. This is usually located at:

My Documents > Ableton > Library > Presets > Max Audio Effect.

---------------------------

Because it looks like Max is searching for the poly_movies.maxpat file and not finding it, and since thats the patch that triggers the video, that would be a problem!

Cheers,

James

Hello James. Excited to get Grid Video working for a live event. Is it confirmed to work in Live 9? I followed all the instructions but just get a black screen. It seems to be turning on the webcam but that too is black. Thanks so much - very cool project I hope you keep it up!
