Umut Eldem is a composer, researcher, and educator specialising in generative and intersensory art using Max/MSP. His works explore audiovisual spaces and compositional processes through algorithms combining various interdisciplinary systems. Umut believes in making knowledge accessible and inspiring through endless creative experimentation.

Umut Eldem is a composer, interdisciplinary artist, and researcher. His artistic works and research focus on the exploration of synaesthesia as an artistic medium. He received his Bachelor’s degree in composition at the Mimar Sinan State Conservatory in Istanbul, Turkey, and a Master’s degree in composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, Belgium. In the same institution, he has done his Post-graduate research, ‘Foundations of Cross-Modal Analytic Thinking’, on the applicability of synaesthesia and colour as an inter-sensory musical concept.

He has given lectures on his research of synaesthesia, and had his audiovisual works and installations combining sound and colours presented in many academic conferences and art festivals in various countries across the world. Umut is currently a Ph.D. researcher, teacher, and research coordinator at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. He gives lessons and workshops on music history, musical analysis, and using Max/MSP for algorithmic thinking and audiovisual design.

Through many years of experience specialising in audiovisual creation and compositional processes, Umut has led many workshops, classes, and conferences on using Max/MSP as a creative artistic tool for composers and audiovisual creatives, including collaborations with Music Hackspace, and his Youtube channel, Hearing Glass, focusing on creative coding with Max/MSP. He offers one-on-one consultations, online courses, and workshops for all levels.

As an educator, he aims to put an emphasis on making knowledge of creative coding accessible and inspiring for beginner and intermediate learners alike.
