No sound from speakers on laptop with windows

I am having an issue with the audio coming out of the speakers of my laptop. I already checked that the volume is on and the settings in the audio status of Max are correct. I also check the sound settings of my laptop and I believe everything is in order: max app have selected as output the speakers of the laptop, sound drivers are updated, format of output is the same as the audio status in Max (16 bit, 48000 Hz). I reset Max and my laptop several times and it doesn´t work. The objects like makenote actually make sounds I can hear in the speakers, but when is cycle~ I can´t hear anything, even when I see the sound is happening. I read the turorials in cycling website and can´t find anything I haven´t done there. What am I missing? I am using a surface laptop with Windows 11.

I just change by chance the audio driver from ad_mme to ad_directsound, even when I was pretty sure that I was using the mme before without issues, but now the sound is working. Now I need to look up what´s the difference between both audio drivers :S

Back in the days - very long ago - directsound was the original Windows API only supporting stereo. mme was a later implementation supporting multi channel audio.

I haven’t worked on Windows for over 10 years though. It’s possible that this isn’t true anymore.

I am again having problems with the audio setup. Audio stoped working when I was doing a tutorial for playing and recording a sample. I switch to my headphone microphone to record something in the buffer~, and I could hear me back in the headphones. I did save the recording and play it back with windows player, and after that Max stop reproducing any sound. I did every possible checking of the audio status I could imagine, restart Max and my computer couple of times but no luck. Suddenly, it started working in another patch I was working but sounded distorted and strange, so did in another patches. I choose MME driver and also Directsound drive and try every combination possible, and the sound didn´t improve. Something different from the audio status in my previous screenshot I posted, is that Latency field was empty, and now I can only choose Medium. I opened Ableton and everything was working well there with the MME drive choose. What could be wrong?

I don’t have a good advice, just that build in sound cards in laptops under Windows can be tricky sometimes in my experience.

You could try to install ASIO drivers and see if that makes a difference. Otherwise maybe try a small external sound sound cards.
