Metal Mirror is a meditative musical instrument that exploits the resonant properties of a large sheet of steel.
The performer has precise control of amplitude and subtle tuning adjustments over a set of pitches chosen in advance. Sine tones are introduced into the metal plate via a surface mount transducer and then reamplified with a contact mic, though other source material can be used. The use of a contact mic also encourages the use of incidental sounds (e.g. tapping, scraping, bowing) in the performance.
How did this project use Max?
The position of the magnetic blocks is tracked with Jitter. Position information is parsed by Max and mapped to musical parameters. Max is also in charge of supplying audio source material to the surface mount transducer.
