Synesthesia is a Max for Live audio effect that explores the relationship between sound, color, and intuitive musical control. Instead of relying on traditional parameter-heavy interfaces, the device uses a color spectrum as its primary controller, allowing chorus, delay, and flanger effects to be shaped through visual and perceptual gestures rather than numerical adjustment.

The device is built on the idea that many musicians already describe and perceive sound in terms of color, brightness, and texture. By mapping RGB color values to multiple effect parameters simultaneously, Synesthesia transforms a single continuous gesture into a coordinated set of musical changes. Moving through the spectrum alters delay timing, modulation depth, and flanging behavior in a musically balanced way, encouraging exploration while preserving internal coherence between effects.

At a technical level, the spectrum control converts red, green, and blue values into numerical control data that is distributed across the internal effect chain. Individual color channels are mapped to specific parameters within the chorus, delay, and flanger stages, allowing smooth transitions between thickening, widening, and shimmering textures. This approach reduces technical decision-making and supports a more immediate, flow-oriented creative process.

In addition to the spectrum control, the device includes a small set of conventional parameters for fine adjustment. Global saturation, mix, and dry/wet controls allow the user to shape intensity and balance, while a dedicated feedback control is provided for the flanger stage. These controls are intentionally limited to maintain focus on the expressive, color-based interaction.

Synesthesia is designed as a creative and conceptual effect rather than a transparent processor. It functions as a macro-style modulation tool, where gradual, gesture-based movement through color gradients becomes a compositional device. The patch embeds a defined aesthetic and range of musically safe outcomes, encouraging experimentation without overwhelming the user with technical detail.

Nostalgia Panner is a Max for Live audio effect designed to explore how memory and perception become altered over time. The device focuses on nostalgia as a subjective experience rather than an accurate reconstruction of the past. It uses spatial motion, spectral filtering, and subtle temporal instability to create an immersive but intentionally unstable listening environment.

The device is built on the Max for Live Surround Panner and extends it into an eight-channel surround effect. Each output channel is processed through a dedicated band-pass filter. The center frequencies of these filters are distributed logarithmically across the audible spectrum, ranging from approximately 31 Hz to 13,228 Hz. As audio rotates through the surround field, it moves sequentially through these frequency bands, creating a continuous spectral and spatial transformation.

Additional delay and randomized tape-style modulation are applied to reduce clarity and introduce gentle temporal variation. Rotation is controlled by a phasor, allowing continuous movement around the full eight-channel field with adjustable speed.

This device is intended for use as a spatial and conceptual effect rather than a transparent processor. It is particularly effective on percussive elements, sustained textures, and vocal material, but can be applied to any audio source.

The system does not operate autonomously: it is based on a set of precise rules, combining written elements, determined variations, and generative processes incorporating degrees of randomness. It follows no linear script, but unfolds through a modular and combinatorial logic, where each execution actualizes a unique configuration of the system.

Each component of the performance — rhythmic sequences, sound textures, light pulses, visual projections — evolves according to its own temporal logic. These elements are not mechanically synchronized, but interweave within a dynamic of unstable balance, where the slightest variation — even minimal — can shift the perception of the whole: the flow, the structure, the space.
