A Max external that generates invented language — pseudo-words that hold the shape and internal consistency of a language without belonging to any existing one.

One [ortho] object mints a language substrate from a seed and then draws every word from that same substrate, so its output reads as one tongue rather than a fresh scramble. Names recur. Phrases return whole. Things get quoted. Every seed names a different language, and the same seed always names the same one.

Seven dials, each 0 to 1, control how much the language repeats itself and how it is punctuated. Three further attributes shape how much text comes out without touching the language. Words arrive as a list of symbols; a parallel list reports each word's origin, so patches can treat a recurring name differently from a freshly minted word.

The generator is a host-neutral C library shared with a JavaScript reference implementation and an openFrameworks addon. A seed produces identical output in all three, proven against published golden vectors rather than assumed.

Original Copy is a project that explores the translation of visual material into sound, text and musical notation. Visual input is generated by a combination of bespoke mechanical devices as well as video footage and material recordings/documentation made on specific site visits. Material generated by the project has taken the form of short film works, a collection of audio releases, installations in exhibitions and live performances. The project is a collaboration between Bristol based Riccardo Carbone & London based John Strutton

This was a live improvised performance by Original Copy, Stephen Dunne & Mark Titchner at Townhall Arts Centre, Cavan, Ireland, as part of Stephen Dunne's exhibition "Outside the Hermit's Cave". The Hermit's Song was an installation and live performance in Newtown Castle, in the Burren, Ireland. The film is part of an ongoing collaboration with the Burren College of Art exploring the Burren landscape, and documents the installation and performance in the castle in 2025.

Max was used for audio soundscape creation, text creation for live dialogue/spoken word, and interfacing with an arduino controller embedded in an old stick!

bbox is a transparent UI object that reports when a point enters or exits a rectangular region, along with its position and motion.

It takes coordinates from two sources interchangeably: the mouse (place a transparent bbox over any visual and it tracks the cursor), or [list x y] from any source — Jitter blob tracking, OSC, Python/OpenCV or MediaPipe over udpreceive. Both paths share the same hit-test and output, so the input source doesn't change the behavior. Output fires on enter/exit transitions or continuously every frame.

A built-in motion follower smooths the tracked point and derives velocity, acceleration, and angle of travel, emitting them as tagged pos/vel/accel/angle/moving messages for downstream routing. Smoothing, movement threshold, and start/stop debounce are all adjustable, and the follower coasts naturally to rest when the point leaves the region.

Here is the start of a tracker interface for max. It's gone through a few iterations already. The bulk of this project is currently a JS/v8 GUI object, which writes to a multi-channel buffer. I chose the buffer as data-storage because (unless i am mistaken) its indices can be looked-up sample accurately by a phasor,  and in turn can trigger a gen~ object. At the moment it only supports one pattern, but it can be as long as you want, and has no hard limits to the number of channels. There will be further abstraction and facilities to store/retrieve patterns, sequences of patterns.

The columns can be any type from the following: Note, 2Hex, 4Hex, FFXXYY, and trigger.

keyboard shortcuts, at the time of writing, constricted by existing Max kb shortcuts:

- shift + arrows     : set the selection rectangle

It will write data to a multi-channel buffer, and you can read from that buffer at desired time-intervals. I'm still adding some UI/UX for swing (i'm partial to shuffle techno). For the inquisitive the JS module has routines for writing to matrices and Ableton midi tracks (in realtime).

I come from old school trackers, 4 channels then st3, impulse tracker, buzz, sunvox. Of the list of trackers I've used, I think impulse tracker came closest to a direct link  between thought and pattern data, and reproducible happy accidents. Everything could be done via keyboard. I would like to achieve some kind of platform where i can drive soft-synths or samples or send midi / CC changes.

Yes, serious goals. This thing has been on my mind for maybe 25 years. I'm keeping the tracker part open source, because - if you think about it - it's just a glorified excel-type interface. Agnostic to the final use-case. Personally I want to make hardware that runs this patch and a variety of max/msp synths/samplers which can be surgically controlled via the tracker interface. I've wanted this stuff way before hardware trackers emerged.

Feedback + warnings welcome :)   i've only been using max for 6 months and am slowly going through youtube and the GO book. I've also implemented some routines that write data to Ableton Live tracks, which is also pretty cool as reinventing the wheel is not necessarily my goal.
