Sometimes a project produces great results, and sometimes it helps you create better work of your own. This week, I explore something that has done both for me: A little project called 

, and the hints dropped about the object used to create it.

The TBA (acronym alert!) project produced a great result: a massively time-stretched version of the 

 track that ended up sounding like a boy’s choir backed up by 

. When you read the project description, you see that it is based off of the 

object set. That got me object-diving - and having fun.

 object is very different from Max 7’s built-in 

 object. While it works as a buffer player, there is no rendering time required - so changes are made on-the-fly. The sound is also completely different; rather than trying to create a high-quality, artifact-free stretch, 

 embraces the sound of its internal algorithm, and produces ethereal and glassy soundscapes from almost any input. If you’ve gotten a chance to work with the 

 system, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

 are Mac-only, but worth the effort if that is your platform of choice. The 

 object is now warmly embraced by my personal performance rig, and I’ll bet you’ll be mesmerized by it as well...

The TBA (acronym alert!) project produced a great result: a massively time-stretched version of the Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) track that ended up sounding like a boy’s choir backed up by Sunn O))). When you read the project description, you see that it is based off of the vb.stretch~ object created by Volker Böhm as part of his vb-objects object set. That got me object-diving - and having fun.

The vb-stretch~ object is very different from Max 7’s built-in stretch~ object. While it works as a buffer player, there is no rendering time required - so changes are made on-the-fly. The sound is also completely different; rather than trying to create a high-quality, artifact-free stretch, vb-stretch~ embraces the sound of its internal algorithm, and produces ethereal and glassy soundscapes from almost any input. If you’ve gotten a chance to work with the Paulstretch system, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

The vb-objects are Mac-only, but worth the effort if that is your platform of choice. The vb-stretch~ object is now warmly embraced by my personal performance rig, and I’ll bet you’ll be mesmerized by it as well...
