Hardware Review: The Expert Sleeper Disting (updated)

The Disting is an analog Eurorack module from the Expert Sleepers that I see in almost everyone’s system. From the beginning it's been a real all-purpose tool in terms of functionality (just take a look at the manual if you don't believe me) that's been continuously improved via an impressive sequence of firmware updates. With the recent addition of SD file (and midi) playback and at just 4hp, there’s basically no reason why you wouldn’t run it.

I’ve been rocking some Expert Sleepers hardware in my system for a while and there are a few things I love about it. First, Os (the English guy who runs the show) is one of those designer/programmers whose care for his products continues long after he’s sold the product to you. Second, he listens to user requests and implements them where he can (see the huge feature request list for the Disting on the MW forum), many of which he’s tackled.

But the recent firmware update provided something that no one could have seen coming (okay - I sure didn't see it coming): the addition of the functionality of the discontinued Expert Sleepers ES1 and ES2 modules as modes of operation in the Disting - and this is where Max comes into play!

You can now use you Disting as an interface between your computer and your modular, CV In/Out! Rather than doing a lengthy textplanation of how to make this work, Os from Expert sleepers has helpfully made a couple of videos to explain things (Note: as you watch and listen, assume that Max could be your software substitute).

In short, the Expert Sleepers Swiss Army Knife just grew another blade!
