5.1 mixing
Hi All,
I'm currently working on mixing in 5.1 surround.
Is anyone aware of any objects to help with this using an appropriate pan law?
Also I'm mainly interested in panning stereo audio files
Thanks
Jack
fascinating subject. I could be easily oversimplified, but as it is a non-symetrical setup, good panners are indeed very rare!
if you are interested to understand the complexity, check Tomlinson Holman's book. He invented the standard and is very interesting to read. The book is Surround Sound: Up and Running
There are some very interesting BBC technical reports of the 70s on perceptual quad panning laws that he quotes and that I was able to find back on the BBC website too.
So I'm sorry if this is a non-answer, but I've been fascinated by the subject for a certain time...

Not looked at it, but there's a 5.1 example patch here:

Hi
Maybe look at C74's Octirama or discontinued UpMix for ideas . . .
Cheers

Thanks Guys
Really appreciate the responses will check them out.
@Macciza I'm not sure where to find what you've mentioned could you help me out?
Jack
Hi
Sorry I realise now that I should not use C&$ as an abbreviation for Cycling 74, obviously . . . .
I was referring to Octirama by Cycling74 available from 'other software' section of 'products' . . .
UpMix was Cyclings Stereo to Surround processor for 'UpMixing' 2 to 5 channels.
Thought they may offer some ideas. Maybe Jamoma panning modules, or Ambipanning . . .
Sorry about that
Cheers
MM
Thanks Macciza,
That helps allot

a discontinued commercial plug-in written in another language than
max will not so easily be a starting point to find the right pan law. :)
4. is easy, .1 is easy too, what is difficult is the center speaker.
MS conversion is not as easy as one might think in the first moment
it is a world for itself.
4 is easy if you dismiss the psychoacoustics I was referring to (or you do like Holman suggests and EQ the LsRs differently...)
C is also quite difficult to deal with...
Keep us posted with your findings!
