A Max Blog?
Since I have a captive audience for a little while....
With Max 5's html integration, the timepoint is right to start a Max blog.
The idea has been in the ether ever since Max-in-a-web-browser was
demonstrated a few years ago. I have long envisioned a Max-integrated Max
blog. In a short while we will see just what will be possible. I look
forward to the Max ecosystem (as David Z. once called it) becoming even more
diverse and Max becoming the nervous system of much of the creative work
being done in electronic media. A Max blog could be an enriching component
to the Max ecosystem. I enjoy the tangential conversations on this list and
greatly enjoyed the short-lived Memegarden list. Max articles in the
Computer Music Journal, the articles on the Cycling '74 site, Andrew
Benson's recipes, Vade's tutorial, DDG's Creative Synth tutorial's and Peter
Kirn's (who goes out of his way to promote Max) Create Digital Motion/Music
serve as inspiration for a Max blog. We have a great community here of
people who are enthusiastic about Max. Who would be willing to contribute
an inaugural article? Who would be willing to contribute an inaugural
article if a Max 5 upgrade would be awarded to the "best" (by vote perhaps?)
post? If bribery is necessary to get this blog off on the right foot, then
so be it. I am sure you will have many ideas about what you would like to
see and where you would like a Max blog to go. I would like to have a
dialogue here about this project but feel free to contact me off list if
need be. Also, I would love to hear from people experienced in the logistics
of running a blog.
Best,
B
Good idea. Have you seen this thread: https://cycling74.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&goto=116276&rid=0&S=03e0732cfba21192a6c42458036a3b59
I would be interested into submitting articles occasionally, no bribes necessary.
Some options:
- Use an RSS feed aggregator, or something along those lines, and pull content from Max-related websites. Very minimalist approach and probably won't feel seamless.
- Use a free online multi-user blog, maybe something like this:
http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=41440&topic=12454
Might be a pain to move content off there later.
- Buy a domain and install a multiuser blog and manage a real website. Much more work. See http://blogsavvy.net/multi-user-blog-tools-overall-ratings-and-reviews for some options.
One thing I wonder about: I want to primarily publish on my own website, and then with minimal effort put select articles on the max blog. Not sure how that would work.
Oh, just realized what you meant by "max-integrated max blog". That could be very, very cool.
But I do wonder about the stability of it as a web server system. It's probably smart to use an established online blogging website or standard webserver setup like Apache + PHP/Python/Ruby for the main site. Then do projects/demos/interactive tutorials on the Max-integrated blog piece and link over to there. Too many unforeseen problems otherwise, and I certainly wouldn't want to rewrite blogging software as a Max patch if you were thinking along those lines. There's so many good solutions already, I want to do other things with Max :)
The hosting seems tricky though. Unless we had some sort of remote desktop setup or someone was hosting out of their house, it might be hard to run Max in a server environment. For one thing, there's no command line usage. Plus inexpensive hosting providers probably would not allow Max to be installed.
But first, we must wait and see what's possible...
