I made a patch with several experiments to understand exactly what happens with the high and low priority in Max, and some of the advanced settings in the Max preferences.

(overdrive, defer/deferlow, scheduler slop, poll throttle, event interval...)

this is great, very informative-- it, or something like it, should be part of the max distro, as part of a tutorial-- maybe you could put it on the max wiki...
