Is there a simple way to access attribute-values of max-objects (e.g. numeric value of a slider, etc.) within a script?

I am aware of the possible workaround, by sending the object a message, causing it to output the requested value and then send it back to the js-object via one of its inlets. I am just wondering if there might be a more simple approach. It seems standing to reason, given the easy, straight-forward possibilities of SETTING object-values within a script, by sending the object a correspondent message.

I assume that the pattr-system is accassible within a script. At least the pattr-reference states: "see the JavaScript in Max manual for more information on using the pattr system with JavaScript". Well, I searched each site in the JavaScript in Max manual (

 for the string "pattr", without any result. Any way, getting attribute-values of max objects via the pattr-system within a script would be a reasonable solution for me. My initial question of a simple, straight forward approach, however, remains. I can't imagine that there isn't such!!
