acoustic piano to midi keyboard

Hello,

Do you have some idea to use acoustic piano like a midi keyboard? I found on the internet moog piano bar, but It is no longer manufactured. Do you know some alternative for moog piano bar, or do you think that converting piano audio to midi in real time is practical?

Warm regards,
Piotr

I've had a piano bar for years, works pretty well, the only real disadvantage is it takes away a little key depth. Have you looked for one on eBay?

I can't find even one ebay, Am I right that moog piano bar send only on/off, so 0 or 127? Do you have ideas for some alternatives for moog piano bar?

They were originally made by Buchla, so maybe you could find one under that name?

I know there are other MIDI retrofits for pianos, but I think they're more invasive. A search for "add midi to acoustic piano" brought up https://sebion.wordpress.com http://www.pianodisc.com/midi-controller-retrofit-system/ www.qrsmusic.com/PNOScan.asp and forum posts that may have more ideas, and probably more if I looked properly.

Thank you for your message. It's still not available and expensive. What do you think about the idea of converting piano audio to midi in realtime? Do you think it could work correctly?

I'm not the best person to answer that, as I haven't yet managed to get pitch-to-MIDI working well with a 3-octave monophonic instrument. My *guess* is that a piano, polyphonic and with a 7+ octave range, would be difficult or impossible. Of course, I'd LOVE to be proven wrong!

You may want to check out https://cycling74.com/project/midi-merlin/#.V3TlnsvNZY9 and http://www.jamorigin.com although neither of them are specifically intended for piano. There may be others, of course.

While there are programs around now such as Melodyne that are able to do polyphonic note detection, they're not even close to real time

Your only options are PianoDisc and QRS retrofitting, or Yamaha Disklavier for an integrated solution.

The Moog piano bar had a lot of issues but I suppose it worked OK for very simple tracking.

hey @piotr did you ever try writing this patch? seems like it wouldn't be crazy hard to get something working at a very basic level (i'm sure it'd be far from perfect). since I've got a rhodes, I'm already connected to my audio interface anyway... so thinking of giving this a shot.
