ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION IN MUSIC: COMPOSER-IMPROVISER

Position: Assistant Professor (tenure track)

Start Date: July 1, 2011

Description: Composer-improviser with an established reputation who will diversify the range of contemporary creative practices explored in the department's graduate program in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology (ICIT), complementing the existing faculty. We especially seek applicants with a body of innovative work that moves beyond traditional academic distinctions such as high/low culture and Western/non-Western music. Examples include interactive/performative technology, African American music, intermedia, intercultural music making, and synthesis of different musical traditions. In addition to offering graduate courses in ICIT, this person will contribute to the undergraduate curriculum, such as in the areas of theory or analysis, and fulfill normal service duties appropriate to the position.

Academic qualifications: We seek candidates who hold an appropriate advanced degree in music or professional experience commensurate with the appointment.

About the UC Irvine Music Department: The Department of Music has a faculty of nineteen full-time members and many exceptional part-time faculty from the Los Angeles area. It boasts excellent facilities in support of performance activities and music technology. The Claire Trevor School of the Arts offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in Dance, Drama, Music, and Studio Art. Irvine is located in Orange County, about 45 miles south of Los Angeles and about six miles from the ocean. Hello Christopher,

Just checking this while searching the forums, . . . this is the dreamjob :-)

Question for you : if someone were to prove themselves worthy of such a post, what bearing would a lack of college degrees have ? I realize the post is likely filled, but I wanted to ask the generic questions to gain some perspective on the lay of the land.

As soon as I get my project completed, I will begin a prolific and prodigious outflow. I am hoping that will be within the next couple of weeks.

My guess is that you getting this or a similar job without a degree in a relevant field is about a 0% chance.
